New ICG Project on Global Terrorism:

The International Crisis Group is embarking on a new project focused on building sustainable international defences against terrorism. The project will include the establishment of a Middle East Program and a Pakistan/Afghanistan Project (linked to our present Central Asia Project). As such, we are currently seeking to fill the following positions:


Senior Analysts and Analysts, Middle East Program (Amman-based)

Role:

  • Five specialists are sought with primary expertise in, respectively:
    • Iran;
    • Iraq;
    • Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States;
    • Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza; and
    • Domestic extremism in Egypt and North Africa.
  • Providing analysis and advice on the key issues involved in building cooperative defences against terrorism and addressing the political and security issues, as well as the economic, social and cultural issues, that feed grievances.
Responsibilities:

  • Conducting extensive field research into prevailing security, social, political and economic conditions in the Middle East;
  • Proposing policy initiatives needed to build and sustain a united and cooperative response to terrorism and related deadly conflict in the Middle East by relevant governments and authorities;
  • Preparing detailed reports and briefing papers setting out relevant research findings and policy recommendations; and
  • Advocating ICG's findings and recommendations to key officials and policymakers in the region and abroad and to the media.
Essential:

  • Deep knowledge of the region as a whole, with specific expertise in at least one of the five areas named above;
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills;
  • Sound policy judgement;
  • Experience in a similar field-based position in the government/non-government sector; and
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language; and
  • Excellent local language skills.
  • Experience with terrorism issues desirable.
Salary:

USD 55,000 plus, to be negotiated depending on skills and experience.


BRUSSELS OFFICE (HQ)

Senior Accountant

Role:

  • Provide support to Finance Director in all areas of financial and management accounting at ICG.
Responsibilities:

  • Processing of monthly financial returns from field and advocacy offices, and liaison with financial and administrative staff there.
  • Preparation of monthly management accounts and reports for distribution to senior management.
  • Daily cash management
  • Preparation of financial parts of funding proposals to donor organisations, and periodic financial reports to donors on use of funds.
  • Assistance with preparation of employment contracts and monthly payroll input.

Essential:

  • Recognised accounting qualification. Some post qualification experience in an international environment an advantage.
  • Computer literate, with good working knowledge of excel, word, and E-Mail. Knowledge of SUN accounting and VISION an advantage.
  • Bilingual English/French with good oral and written communication skills.
  • Personal qualities-proactive, problem-solver, stress-resistant, able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Salary:

USD 45,000 depending on experience


PRISTINA OFFICE

Kosovo Project Director

Role:

  • Co-ordinate in Pristina ICG's field research, analysis, policy prescription and advocacy activities in relation to Kosovo.
Responsibilities:

  • Managing ICG�s Kosovo Office, including supervision of several analysts;
  • Conducting field research into prevailing security, social, political and economic conditions in Kosovo;
  • Proposing practical policy recommendations for implementation by local and international officials in Kosovo and policymakers in foreign governments;
  • Preparing detailed reports and briefing papers setting out relevant research findings and policy recommendations; and
  • Advocating ICG's findings and recommendations to the media and to key officials and policymakers in Kosovo and abroad.

Essential:

  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills;
  • Sound policy judgement;
  • Experience in a similar field-based position in the government/non-government sector;
  • Previous experience in Kosovo and additional experience in the region;
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills; and
  • Experience in managing personnel and project finances.
Salary:

$65,000 plus, to be negotiated.


NAIROBI OFFICE

Political Analyst - Sudan

Role:

  • Conducting field research into prevailing security, social, political and economic conditions in Sudan;
Responsibilities:

  • Advocating ICG's findings and recommendations to the media and to key officials and policymakers in the region and abroad.
  • Analysing specific issues linked to political stability, economic regeneration and the prevention of further conflict;
  • Proposing practical policy recommendations for implementation by local and international officials in the region and policymakers in foreign governments;
  • Preparing detailed reports and briefing papers setting out relevant research findings and policy recommendations; and

Essential:

  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills;
  • Sound policy judgement;
  • Experience in a similar field-based position in the government/non-government sector;
  • At least two years previously spent in Sudan;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Mother tongue-level English. Knowledge of local languages would be an asset
Salary:

USD 55,000


Internship Opportunities

ICG advocacy offices in Brussels, Washington, New York and Paris offer flexible internships usually lasting 2-3 months. Internships are geared towards current undergraduates or recent university graduates. They are primarily administrative in nature, but do include research opportunities.
