Correction to the 8 August 2002 briefing, Al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia: The Case of the Ngruki Network in Indonesia

Information received by ICG in late December 2002 revealed an error in our 8 August 2002 briefing, Al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia: The Case of the Ngruki Network in Indonesia. The error relates to Abdul Wahid Kadungga and his relationship to the Egyptian organisation, Gama Islami. We stated that Kadungga developed a close friendship in the late 1980s with Usama Rushdi of Gama Islami, when both were resident in the Netherlands. This information was supplied by a source whose material on other key points we had been able to corroborate, and on whom we accordingly relied. Rushdi has now informed ICG that he never met Kadungga and only moved to the Netherlands in 1993. We accept that correction, sincerely regret our error and apologise for any embarrassment it may have caused.
