Project Overview
In early 1998 ICG took the first steps towards creating a field program centred on the Great Lakes region in Africa and has since published a series of policy reports detailing political, military and socio-economic developments in the region. In July 1999 a regional office was established in Nairobi, providing a base for a team that today comprises four full-time policy analysts. Since fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) began in the summer of 1998, ICG has been a source of information and analysis in relation to Central Africa's fast-changing seven-nation war. A special focus has been in the war aims and strategies of the main combatants and regional efforts to broker and implement the Lusaka Peace Accords. ICG has also tracked the performance of the Kabila government in Kinshasa.
