Africa Online: ICG's Directory of Websites on Africa

Contents

Introduction

Popular perceptions of Africa can be misleading not least due to the lack of news coverage of events on the continent and a scarcity of publications and other sources of information. Very few international news agencies cover Africa and even the most serious and influential Western newspapers tend to make do with one or two correspondents in the field and a hand-full of "stringers".

Against this backdrop, researchers are turning increasingly to the internet as a source of information and opinion on African affairs. In recent years, Africa-oriented websites and webpages has mushroomed across the world wide web, dramatically increasing the potential store of material on Africa available to researchers and others. However, while the volume and diversity of information available via the internet has risen dramatically, much of it is poorly organised and accessing the best sources is a time-consuming and challenging task.

With this problem in mind, the International Crisis Group has compiled the present directory. The directory lists and briefly describes over 225 of the best websites to contain information on Africa. Some of them are Africa-specific, others have an Africa component alongside information on other parts of the world. The aim is to help facilitate easier access to Africa-related material and so help raise awareness of what is happening in Africa.

The first section of the directory, entitled Gateways to General Information on Africa, contains links to general interest Africa-oriented websites where you can find information on subjects such as African culture, geography, cuisine, music, film, writing etc.

The rest of the directory focuses on six specific categories of websites:

  • Intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
  • Human rights and justice
  • Politics and economics
  • Conflict and conflict prevention
  • Academia
  • Media

Note

The following symbols are used throughout the directory to indicate special features available on each website:

Websites with a forum/opportunity to exchange opinions and mail with other visitors to the site.
