ICG NAIROBI

Central and Horn of Africa Project Interns

Role:

  • ICG is seeking two interns to work for six months from November 2003 for its Central Africa and Horn of Africa Projects respectively. The internships are entry level positions and would suit candidates with a recent post graduate degree from an African University in political science, conflict studies or public administration.

Responsibilities:

  • Research on core conflict issues in the region relevant to ICG program areas;
  • Providing assistance in writing and editing reports on conflict issues;
  • Preparation of advocacy materials and attending meetings on behalf of the ICG staff;
  • Preparation of draft presentations and speaker notes;
  • Maintaining contact with governments, academic institutes, think-tanks, NGOs; and
  • Administrative work relative to the project.

Essential:

  • Enrolled in or recently completed a post graduate degree in political science, conflict studies, public administration or similar, from an African university;
  • An excellent verbal and written command of English (or French) and good knowledge of French (or English);
  • Thorough knowledge of one of the three regions and conflict issues; and
  • Two years professional experience within an international relations environment/NGO, desirable but not compulsory.

Salary:

Monthly allowance of 500 USD - local accommodation is available should it be needed. ICG will cover the travel expenses from and to the locations.


ICG FREETOWN

West Africa Project Intern

Role:

ICG BRUSSELS

ICG Brussels internships are aimed at students or recent graduates and are full time posts lasting 3-6 months. The Brussels office attempts to cater its internship program to the particular interests of the applicants. We therefore ask all applicants to specify in the subject of their email/cover letter which of the following they are interested in:

  • Africa

  • Balkans/Caucasus/Moldova/Russia

  • EU External Relations

  • Media

  • General support to the office of the President and Research Department

There is of course some overlap and duties combine research and administrative tasks. We expect a certain flexibility and ability to assist with a variety of tasks based on the needs of the organisation at the time of the internship. The working language is English. ICG WASHINGTON

ICG Washington internships, lasting for 3-6 months, are geared towards current undergraduates, recent university graduates, and graduate students with a significant background in international relations, ideally in ICG Washington's key project areas (Middle East, Africa, Columbia, and HIV/AIDS). Language skills are a plus but not a necessity. Interns work with ICG staff from all over the world and have the opportunity for in-depth learning in particular areas. Duties include conducting targeted research, attending meetings, seminars, and lectures, tracking media coverage, and contributing to general office support duties, including report distribution.

ICG NEW YORK

The three ICG New York internships are aimed at students or recent graduates and are primarily administrative in nature with exposure to the workings of an international NGO and to the specific working areas of the New York Office: 1) the United Nations, 2) Legal and 3) Fundraising/Special events. Some writing, attending UN meetings, other policy meetings and research are also involved. The internships are 3-5 months in duration.

ICG-ASIA Program Internship in New York City.

ICG's Asia Program is looking for an intern to work in the organisation's New York City office from January for a period of six months or one year.

Major responsibilities:

The position involves assisting ICG's Asia Program Director in his work including helping researchers in field offices across Asia by preparing background files and handling research tasks, preparing advocacy materials, speeches and press releases, organising and attending meetings with international organisations, government officials and the media and aiding other staff of ICG in their work. The job requires flexibility, intelligence and hard work but offers an excellent opportunity for someone to learn about conflict analysis and advocacy work and gain valuable experience in a high profile international NGO.

Requirements:

  • A recent graduate degree in a subject such as international relations or have graduated from a demanding undergraduate degree course;
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills;
  • Computer literacy.
  • An ability to deal confidently and swiftly with a variety of demanding tasks.
  • Proven research skills in international relations or a similar subject, conflict analysis or human rights work.
  • An interest and knowledge of Asia and
  • Preferably working ability in one of the following languages: Russian, Chinese, Dari, Pashtu, Bahasa Indonesia, Nepalese, Urdu. Other languages would be useful.
