"Don't let Zimbabwe implode"
Comment by Gareth Evans in the International Herald Tribune.

18 June 2002

Since the deeply flawed March 2002 presidential election, Zimbabwe has dropped off the radar screen of the media and most policymakers, but its crisis is deepening in three main ways.

"International Challenges after September 11"
Speech by Gareth Evans to Cranlana Programme Alumni, Melbourne.

11 June 2002

The world as we find it after 11 September 2001 is not all that different from the world that existed before. Nine months after the event, we can now see that the main impact 911 was to change perceptions rather than realities. Some things are different, but the fundamentals of the global security and social justice environment remain pretty much as they were.

"Commentary Will Ballots or Bullets Rule? Afghanistan's fate hinges on the outcome of this week's loya jirga"
Comment by J. Alexander Thier in Los Angeles Times

9 June 2002

One morning with Gen. Atiqullah Baryalai in the eastern province of Logar, a few hours south of Kabul, provides more insight into what's going on in Afghanistan than a month of meetings in the capital, with its Land Cruiser traffic jams, international military patrols and Starbucks.

"President Uribe's Colombian challenge"
Comment by Mark L. Schneider in The Observer

9 June 2002

Colombia's 40-year war is usually reported in terms of drugs, murder and kidnapping, but it is a far more complex struggle. The armed groups that terrorise the population also challenge an already weak state, which is unable to fully defend its citizens or its territory. These problems are spilling over Colombia's borders, threatening the security of its neighbours. On 26 May Alvaro Uribe, an independent Liberal, was elected President with an unprecedented mandate. Enormous hopes are pinned on his leadership, but when he assumes office on 7 August he will take over a country that faces mounting attacks by multiple enemies.

"Wanted: U.S. leadership"
Comment by Ken Adelman and Stephen J. Solarz in the Washington Times

7 June 2002

With homicidal bombers continuing their gruesome campaign of terrorism against Israel and Israeli forces engaged in large-scale retaliatory attacks against Palestinians, now is the time for hard thought about how the United States can transform the cycle of violence into a stable peace.
